Welcome to the September edition of TC10 newsletter. As most of you know, thanks to the efforts of the local organizers (from Tunis and Nancy), we had both a great ICDAR conference and workshops. First, we enjoyed a highly interactive GREC workshop, with many fruitful discussions concerning graphics recognition topics. Please, do not forget that the LNCS postproceedings submission will be in November. During the TC-10/TC-11 Joint Meeting at ICDAR 2015, we had the opportunity to know the two bids (from Greece and Australia) and vote for the location of ICDAR 2019, which will be finally held at Brisbane (Australia). For more information, please read the proposal. In this newsletter you will find, in addition to the next call for papers, information concerning the Special Issue “Drawing and Handwriting Processing for User-Centered Systems”, the task "Mathematical information in documents" at the NTCIR-12 Workshop, and the call for hosting the TC10/TC11 Summer School in 2016 and the call for tutorials for DAS 2016. GREC 2015: Information
Eleventh IAPR International Workshop on Graphics Recognition - GREC 2015 August 23-26, 2015, Nancy, France http://grec2015.loria.fr/
The GREC workshop was, as usual, a great opportunity for researchers to meet colleagues and to share new ideas and knowledge about graphics recognition methods. In this edition, 18 papers were presented, followed by highly interactive discussions. We had 27 registered participants from different countries: France (10), Spain (4), Germany (2), USA (2), Brazil (2), Japan (2), South Africa (2), India (2) and China (1).
Post-proceedings As in previous editions, after the workshop, authors have the opportunity to submit an extended and revised paper for full single-blind review and subsequent publication. Please be aware that acceptance for presentation at the workshop does not guarantee acceptance and publication in the post-proceedings.

Special Issue for IEEE Transactions on Human-Machine Systems
We are pleased to inform you that the Special Issue on “Drawing and Handwriting Processing for User-Centered Systems” is open in the IEEE Transactions on Human-Machine Systems journal.
There has been significant progress in the automatic processing of handwriting and drawing, especially in computational models to generate, analyze and recognize pen tip and gesture trajectories in various applications. While it was thought that manuscript production would decrease with the dissemination of computers, today the trend is reversed with the boom of new touch and pen-based interactive devices. Progress in automatic processing of handwriting and drawing, both on-line and off-line, opens real opportunities to produce a true “graphonomics” continuum from paper to digital practices. One key challenge is to bring pattern recognition into reality with applications, taking advantage of the implicit or explicit human-machine interactions.
In this special issue, we invite new and original scientific work taking into account the user in the drawing and handwriting processes in terms of usability, efficiency, collaboration, interaction, cross-learning, and related topics. Consequently, papers are solicited that cross the various communities studying these important and complex human-machine relationships in "graphonomics" fields: pattern recognition, humanities, neuroscience, arts - by considering human centered point of views to design, model and test new advances in these research areas.
Topics of interest include (but are not limited to) - Pen and touch-based human-machine interactions with gesture or drawing interpretation. - Human-machine cooperation in education: semi-automated handwriting evaluations; teaching and learning handwriting based on children-machine interaction. - Adaptive, incremental, evolving learning approaches for: handwriting recognition (off-line and on- line), writer identification and recognition, signature verification. - Document processing based on human-machine interaction loop: historical document, sketches - Human-machine cooperation in medical applications based on handwriting analysis, motor control, learning and adaptation of writing and drawing movements in neuroscience - Usability, efficiency, collaboration, interaction experiments for applications to evaluate human-machine cooperation in the graphonomics field. - Interaction with mobile devices using drawing and handwriting. - Multi-language handwriting processing.

Call for task participation: Mathematical information in documents

Overview NTCIR-12 MathIR is a shared task for retrieving mathematical information in documents. Queries are some combination of keywords and formulae. Participating systems need to return a ranked list of retrieval units (document excerpts) containing formulae and/or text matching a query. Document excerpts are provided by the task organizers.
Dataset Two datasets will be used for NTCIR-12 MathIR. The first is a large collection of roughly 100,000 scientific articles from the arXiv, and a separate collection of roughly 35,000 Wikipedia articles. The larger arXiv dataset will include about 30-60M math formulae (including single-symbol formulae). Each document will be divided into excerpts (‘retrieval units’) of roughly a paragraph each in size. Queries contain keywords and one or more math formulae. Formulae are encoded in LaTeX, Presentation MathML and Content MathML, representing the appearance and mathematical operations for each formula. Combined text + formulae queries are encoded in XML using a format similar to the example shown here: http://ntcir-math.nii.ac.jp/introduction/#s3

Call for Hosting Proposals: TC-10 / TC-11 Summer School 2016

Part of the mission of IAPR TC11 and TC10 is to promote high quality educational activities related to Reading Systems and Graphics Recognition. Responding to this need, TC10 and TC11 are soliciting proposals for the organisation of the first "IAPR TC10/TC11 Summer School" during 2016.
The "IAPR TC10/TC11 Summer School" is intended to become the prime educational activity of IAPR TC11 (Reading Systems) and TC10 (Graphics Recognition). The School is meant to be a training activity where participants are exposed to the latest trends and techniques of Reading Systems and Graphics Recognition.
The aim of the School is to provide both an objective and clear overview and an in-depth analysis of the state-of-the-art research in selected topics of Reading Systems and Graphics Recognition. The School should aim to provide a stimulating opportunity for young researchers and Ph.D. students in the field.
Individuals and groups who are interested in Reading Systems and Graphics Recognition are invited to submit proposals for organizing and hosting the 2016 IAPR TC10 / TC11 Summer School.
The IAPR International Workshop on Document Analysis Systems (DAS) is a long standing event in the field of Document Analysis and Recognition, organized by the technical committee on Reading Systems (TC11) of the International Association for Pattern Recognition (IAPR). The aim of this workshop is to bring together international researchers at all levels to share their experiences and to promote research and development in all areas of Document Analysis and Recognition. DAS is a single track event, traditionally focused on applied research, and actively fostering interaction between participants.
DAS2016 intends to offer conference participants two high quality half day tutorials reflecting current topics and trends in all areas of Document Analysis and Recognition. As tutorials are educational events they must include a comprehensive introduction to the state-of-the-art in the corresponding subject. Tutorials should be aimed at varied audience: research students, experienced researchers, practitioners, academics and representatives of governments and funding agencies who wish to learn new technologies.
We encourage submissions of proposals for tutorials on all topics in the established areas of DAS, tutorials bridging those areas, or tutorials introducing new perspectives in those areas. Tutorials could be theoretical; however, we strongly encourage organisers to incorporate hands-on sessions and practical examples at every opportunity.
Tutorials are free for registered DAS participants.
Proposal Structure Tutorial proposal submissions must contain the following sections in the suggested order: 1. Title: A concise title. 2. Presenter(s): The names, affiliation and contact information of the presenter(s). 3. Abstract (1 or 2 paragraphs) 4. Intended Audience (1 paragraph): Describe the background assumed of tutorial attendees. Tutorials may range from basic for attendees new to the field to advanced topics for experts. 5. Expected Attendance: Provide an estimate (justified were possible) of the likely number of participants and some informal evidence that people would attend (e.g., related workshops). 6. Motivation and Learning Outcomes: A statement (no more than 1 page) giving clear motivation/justification for the topic to be presented at DAS. Why is the tutorial important? Why is the tutorial timely? How is it relevant to DAS? What the audience will have benefited from (new skills/knowledge) at the end of the tutorial? 7. Topic and Description: A detailed description (no more than 1 page) of the tutorial topic, providing a sense of both the scope of the tutorial and depth within the scope. 8. Program: An outline description (no more than 2 pages) of the different sessions – if applicable – and their duration, together with justification that a high-quality presentation will be achieved within the chosen time period. Tutorials should be scheduled for half a day (3 or 3.5 hours). Tutorials will take place on Monday, 11th April 2016. 9. Previous Editions. If the tutorial was given before, when and where was it given and how will it be modified for DAS 2016. If possible, provide a link to slides from the previous tutorial presentation. 10. Material: A description (1 or 2 paragraphs) of material to be provided to attendees on the conference website – course slides, annotated bibliography etc. NOTE: the materials themselves do not need to be provided in the proposal. 11. Equipment: Indicate any special equipment needed (if any). The standard equipment will include a projector and a single projection screen. 12. Biographical Sketch(es): A half-page bio-sketch of each tutorial presenter must also be included.
Submission and Selection Procedure Proposals following the structure above must be submitted by email in PDF format to the DAS2016 Tutorials Chairs: Dr Cheng-Lin Liu ( email@example.com ) and Dr Dimosthenis Karatzas ( firstname.lastname@example.org ).
All proposals will be reviewed by a selection committee, comprising DAS 2016 Chairs. The committee will make the final selection of tutorials in order to ensure the highest quality standards and present the greatest variety to conference participants, while fitting the conference schedule.

DAS 2016 is the 12th edition of the 100% participation single-track IAPR sponsored workshop focusing on system-level issues and approaches in document analysis and recognition. The workshop comprises invited speaker presentations, oral, poster, tutorial and demo sessions as well as working group discussions.
DAS 2016 will be organized on the island of Santorini, Greece. Santorini was created from a volcanic eruption that left it with volcanic cliffs overlooking a black and red coast, dazzling against the turquoise Mediterranean. Santorini is one of the most popular, beautiful and unique islands in the world since it combines a cosmopolitan atmosphere, spectacular scenery of deep blue sea and whitewashed houses, breathtaking sunsets, ancient sites, world-class restaurants and an active volcano.
SUBMISSION TYPES DAS2016 will include both long and short papers, posters and demonstrations of working or prototype systems. All submissions will undergo a rigorous review process with a minimum of 3 reviews considering the originality of work, the quality of research or analysis of experience, the relevance to document analysis systems, and quality of presentation of ideas.
Full Papers Full papers should describe complete works of original research. Authors are invited to submit original, unpublished research papers that are not being considered in another forum, up to 6 pages length.
Short Papers Short papers provide an opportunity to report on research in progress, to present novel positions on document analysis systems. Authors may submit short papers (up to 2 pages in length). Short papers will also undergo review and will appear in an extra booklet, not in the official DAS2016 proceedings.
Demonstrations DAS2016 seeks public demonstrations of novel systems, to be presented to the workshop as a whole during breaks between paper sessions. Prospective demonstrators should submit a two-page summary of the system to be demonstrated. Demonstration proposals will undergo review and summaries of accepted demonstrations will appear in the extra DAS2016 booklet, as in the case of short papers.

We would like to encourage all the TC10 and TC11 members to submit such material to the TC10 and TC11 for archiving. The availability of datasets, ground truth and performance evaluation tools online is not only good practice, but also a requirement for a field to progress.
We would like make a special request to the organizers of recent and future competitions. Independently of whether you have the competition datasets and evaluation tools available through other Web sites, please consider archiving them with TC10 / TC11 as well. Web sites often go off-line and useful resources are frequently lost forever.
