Welcome to the March edition of TC10 newsletter, where you will find detailed information about the next GREC 2015 and the Engineering Drawing Challenge. We also enclose information concerning the ICDAR 2015 Workshops, Competitions and Doctoral Consortium, as well as the next IDIPS summerschool, the special issue at IEEE Intelligent Systems and the new available datasets: the CVC-FP: Floor plan dataset, and the L3i TextCopies dataset. In this newsletter we are glad to announce the new TC10 chairs are: - Chair: Rafael Lins, Prof. at Pernanbuco Univ, Recife, Brasil. - Vice-chair: Bart Lamiroy, Ass Prof at Lorraine Univ, Nancy, France. Congratulations to the new chairs and let's thank Jean-Marc Ogier, the former TC10 chair, for his effort during these years.

The TC-10 and GREC 2015 organizing committee are glad to announce that the Eleventh International Workshop on Graphics Recognition (GREC 2015), organized by the IAPR TC-10, will be held at Sousse.
Sousse is a city in Tunisia at about 2 hours from Tunis (where ICDAR 2015 will be held).
Transportation shuttle buses will be arranged between GREC and ICDAR.
The GREC workshops provide an excellent opportunity for researchers and practitioners at all levels of experience to meet colleagues and to share new ideas and knowledge about graphics recognition methods. The workshops enjoy strong participation from researchers in both industry and academia.
Topics - Relevant topics of interest include, but are not limited to: - Raster-to-vector techniques. - Recognition of graphical primitives. - Recognition of graphic symbols in charts, diagrams, and drawings. - Interpretation of engineering drawings, maps, charts, tables, and other graphical documents. - Graphics-based information retrieval. - Historical graphic indexing. - Description of complete systems for interpretation of graphic documents. - Performance evaluation in graphics recognition. - Authoring, editing, storing and presentation systems for graphics multimedia documents. - 3-D models from multiple 2-D views (line drawings). - Identification and localization of graphical mark-ups and annotations in written documents. - Digital ink processing. - Sketch recognition and understanding.
Special Track on Document Element Recognition Document elements such as tables, figures, algorithms, equations, flowcharts, CAD/CAM diagrams, etc. need specialized recognition techniques. A special track will be devoted to papers on a wide range of topics related to document element recognition including, but, not limited to, models, recognition techniques including segmenters, parsers, and inference of document elements, document element understanding, and retrieval.

GREC 2015 Engineering Drawing Challenge: First Announcement
Engineering Drawing Challenge Eleventh International Workshop on Graphics Recognition (GREC 2015) August 20-21, 2015
We present the Engineering Drawing Challenge in the framework of the GREC'15, to be held at the El Hana Hannibal Palace Hotel, Sousse, Tunisia - August 20-21, 2015. This is a totally open challenge, in which the participants are encouraged to present innovative ideas and methods related to automatic engineering drawing interpretation. The ultimate goal is to foster creativity and give more visibility to the presented proposals while collaborating on enriching the state-of-the-art in the field. In the following we present the details of the challenge.
Dataset During last GREC, hundreds of engineering drawings have been made available to our community thanks to Daniel Lopresti and the Bethlehem Steel Corporation. They are both hand-made and computer-made drawings from the 60's to 90's. Tedious work has started at L3i lab to digitize such material and the 23 first images will be soon available for research purposes at the TC10 website.
Description We propose a first exploratory challenge in which only the image dataset is facilitated to the community. Thus, the participants are requested to present open ideas and methods describing how they can collaborate to enhance, understand, preserve and reuse such unique heritage. Each participant is invited to express his interest by submitting an extended abstract to present its method and contribution. The experiments are accepted to be conducted on partial or full dataset. Examples of contributions are (but not limited to): image enhancement, vectorization, text/graphic separation, symbol detection, groundtruthing assistant tool.
Evaluation During GREC'15, all the participants of the Engineering Drawing Challenge will have the opportunity to present their results and the audience will be invited to vote for the best contribution (Student Response System). Among the presented contributions, the authors of the one that will be considered as the most innovative, creative and interesting by the audience will be awarded.
Submission of results Participants are invited to email an extended abstract of two A4 pages maximum following the Author Instructions and Paper Format of GREC'15 to the organizers. Additional material (e.g. results images) can be included as download link.

INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE ON DOCUMENT ANALYSIS AND RECOGNITION (ICDAR) Nominations Due: May 15, 2015
The ICDAR Award Program is an established program designed to recognize individuals who have made outstanding contributions to the field of Document Analysis and Recognition in one or more of the following areas: - Research - Training of students - Research/Industry interaction - Service to the profession
Every two years, two awards categories are presented. Namely, the IAPR/ICDAR Young Investigator Award (less than 40 years old at the time the award is made), and the IAPR/ICDAR Outstanding Achievements Award. Each award will consist of a token gift and a suitably inscribed certificate. The recipient of the Outstanding Achievements award will be invited to give the opening key note speech at the ICDAR 2015 conference, introduced by the recipient from the previous conference.
Nominations are invited for the ICDAR 2015 Awards in both categories.
The nomination packet should include the following:
1. A nominating letter (1 page) including a brief citation to be included in the certificate. 2. A brief vitae (2 pages) of the nominee highlighting the accomplishments being recognized. 3. Supporting letters (1 page each) from 3 active researchers from at least 3 different countries.
A nomination is usually put forward by a researcher (preferably from a different Institution than the nominee) who is knowledgeable of the scientific achievements of the nominee, and who organizes letters of support.
Submission procedure is strictly confidential, and self nominations are not allowed.
The deadline for receipt of nominations is May 15th, 2015 but early submissions are strongly encouraged.

The 6th International Workshop on Camera Based Document Analysis and Recognition (CBDAR 2015) will be held in Gammarth, Tunisia, on August 22nd 2015 in conjunction with ICDAR 2015.
The pervasiveness and widespread availability of camera phones, hand-held digital still/video cameras and more recently wearable cameras have led the community to recognize camera captured images as a promising and growing field of research for document analysis and recognition. Document digitization techniques are gradually getting closer to camera based solutions, offering certain advantages (e.g. for scanning large scale or fragile documents), and presenting interesting new challenges and open problems which cannot be directly resolved by traditional techniques.
Building on the success of the previous five CBDAR workshops in 2005 (Seoul, Korea), 2007 (Curitiba, Brazil), 2009 (Barcelona, Spain), 2011 (Beijing, China), and Washington DC (USA), CBDAR 2015 will be held in Gammarth, Tunisia in conjunction with ICDAR 2015. The aim of the workshop is to provide a natural link between document image analysis and the wider computer vision community by attracting cutting edge research on the topic.

Workshop Format CBDAR is a 100% participation, one-day, single-track workshop featuring keynote talks, oral/poster presentations, a demo session, and a panel discussion.
Publications Electronic copies of the workshop proceedings containing all contributed papers will be distributed at the workshop. After the workshop, revised versions of selected papers will be published in Springer LNCS series as post-proceedings.
Submission Information CBDAR 2015 invites the submission of original, previously unpublished work and welcomes, with some restrictions, submissions which are closely related to work submitted to ICDAR 2015. This workshop employs single-blind review, in which referees remain anonymous for the authors throughout the process. Papers should not exceed 6 printed pages in IEEE CS format. Full details of the formatting instructions, a sample document and templates for LaTeX and MS-Word users will be available at the CBDAR 2015 homepage soon.

It is our pleasure to announce that the 3rd International Workshop on Historical Document Imaging and Processing (HIP’15) will be held in conjunction with ICDAR’15, on August 22, 2015 at the Ramada Plaza Tunis Hotel in Gammarth, Tunisia. ICDAR 2015 Doctoral Consortium: Call for participation
In 2011 the Leadership Teams of TC-10 and TC-11 agreed to jointly organize the first Doctoral Consortium in conjunction with ICDAR 2011 which lead to a successor event that took place in conjunction with ICDAR 2013. Given the great success of these initial events the tradition of Doctoral Consortiums as satelite events to ICDAR conferences will be continued.
The goal of the ICDAR 2015 Doctoral Consortium is to create an opportunity for Ph.D. students to test their research ideas, present their current progress and future plans, and receive constructive criticism and insights related to their future work and career perspectives. A mentor (a senior researcher who is active in the field) will be assigned to each student to provide individual feedback. In addition, students will have the opportunity to present an overview of their research plan during a special poster session.
Participation in the ICDAR 2015 Doctoral Consortium will be be limited to 25 students. Prospective participants are encouraged to submit their application by May 15 (submission procedure to be announced). The Doctoral Consortium Chairs will then review all applications received. Preference will be given to students who are at a stage in their studies most likely to benefit (i.e., they have identified a research direction and published some initial results, but the thesis is not yet set in stone). As in previous years, the event will be organized such that the registration fees for participating students will be minimal. The ICDAR 2015 Doctoral Consortium will take place the day before the main conference, i.e., on August 23.

The sample datasets for ICDAR'15 SmartDoc have just been released. There are two challenges. For the first one you will have to detect and segment a document from 150 mobile captured videos. The goal of the second one is to extract the text from 12000 document pictures taken with a mobile phone.

The "ICDAR2015 Competition on Keyword Spotting for Handwritten Documents" competition is organized in the framework of the ICDAR 2015 competitions by the Pattern Recognition and Human Language Technologies research center with the collaboration of the tranScriptorium partners. This contest aims to bring together researchers working on Handwritten Keyword Spotting (KWS) from different perspectives and provide them a uniform benchmark to fairly compare and promote different approaches, under a variety of restrictions.
The benchmark dataset consists of a series of documents from the Bentham collection, which has been prepared in the tranScriptorium project. This dataset includes manuscripts written by Jeremy Bentham (1748-1832) himself over a period of sixty years, as well as fair copies written by Bentham's secretarial staff. The data used in this contest is closely related to the data used in the ICDAR2015 Competition HTRtS: Handwritten Text Recognition on the tranScriptorium Dataset (http://transcriptorium.eu/~htrcontest/).
KWS systems can be divided into multiple categories: Perhaps, the most used distinction is Query-by-Example/Query-by-String; i.e., whether the query is by giving a word image example, or just a character string. But many other distinctions are (very) relevant; among other: Training-based/training-free; i.e., whether the KWS system is allowed or not to train on appropriate (annotated) images, and Segmentation-based/segmentation-free; i.e., whether the KWS is applied to full document (page) images or just to images of individual words (previously cropped from the original full images).
In order to attract researchers working in any of the previous domains and, at the same time, restrict the size and complexity of the competition, the previous scenarios are distributed in two main tasks, each of which contains two optional assignments:
EVALUATION The systems entering this competition should try to obtain the most accurate keyword spotting system in terms of mean average precision (mAP), measured on the test partition, which will be released after the competition deadline. From each track, a single winner participant will be chosen, based on their best mAP performance in any of the optional assignments within the track. Additional points will be given to participants submitting both assignments. See additional details in (http://www.transcriptorium.eu/~icdar15kws/evaluation.html).
Four baseline systems will be given to the participants, one for each track and assignment. Participants can play with these baseline systems, the validation data and the evaluation toolkit to have a deeper insight about what is expected in each assignment. Contestants will submit their solutions to each assignment through a web-based platform.
SCHEDULE - Jan 10, 2015: Competition opens, start of the registration period. - Jan 31, 2015: Baseline systems, training and validation data are made public. - Mar 31, 2015: Test data provided to the participants, as well as the submissions form. Registration deadline: No more participants will be admitted. - Apr 7, 2015: Deadline for submitting results on the test set, together with the description of the KWS systems used in the final submission. - Aug 23-26, 2015: Winners and final ranking of all teams will be made public at the ICDAR conference.
The 3rd International Document Image Processing Summer School (IDIPS 2015), endorsed by IAPR-TC11 and the Greek branch of IAPR, will be organized this year, on the island of Kefalonia. Once more, the participants will benefit from direct interaction and discussions with the renowned speakers. The researchers will also have the opportunity to present the results of their scientific research, and interact with colleagues in a friendly and constructive atmosphere.
In the evening, the participants will have the opportunity to practice in teams under the supervision of several post-doc researchers of the field. Thus, 2 of the post-doc researchers, that will participate to the Summer School, will be selected to join the organizing team and their accommodation expenses on the island will be covered.
Finally, 3 companies/libraries/organizations that use or create software of the field, will be invited to participate registration-free in order to give a short lecture on practical problems.

Call for papers: Special Issue on Pattern Recognition
Pattern Recognition (PR) is one of the key abilities in human and machine intelligence, and an important branch of the more broad area of Artificial Intelligence (AI). Pattern recognition endows machines the ability of environmental perception, while cognition (including reasoning, knowledge engineering, and language understanding), is addressed by other branches of AI. PR and AI are often interwoven in intelligent systems (for example, the perceptron process exploits knowledge to solve ambiguities in recognition).
The scope of Pattern Recognition includes pattern classification (statistical and structural PR, neural networks, kernel methods, ensemble methods, etc.), clustering, feature extraction and selection, data pre-processing (such as image processing and segmentation), visual object recognition, video analysis, applications in document analysis, biometrics, medical imaging, remote sensing image analysis, multimedia, video surveillance, intelligent transportation, and so on. Methods and applications have both seen tremendous advances in recent years. For example, deep learning methods have boosted performance in many fields such as handwriting recognition, facial recognition, speech recognition, traffic sign recognition, and so on.
This special issue aims to report on and discuss the state of the art in pattern recognition theory and applications - particularly, new ideas, methods, and innovative applications. The topics of interest include, but are not limited to: - Cognitive mechanism and mathematical foundation of PR - Pattern classification - Feature extraction and selection - Machine learning for pattern recognition - Object detection and recognition - Image and Video analysis - Applications in document analysis, biometrics, data mining, intelligent transportation, etc.

This collection consists of 122 scanned floor plan documents divided in 4 different subsets regarding their origin and style. The dataset is fully groundtruthed for the structural symbols: rooms, walls, doors, windows, parking doors, and room separations. The GT not only makes specific their locations in the images, but also includes structural relations between them.
The authors also make public the conceived tool for efficient structural labeling. This tool, named SGT, can easily be installed in any web server and a simple user administration system allows collaborative groundtruthing

We would like to remind you that the TC10 and TC11 Web sites always welcome contributions of new datasets or other resources related to the community. We would like to encourage all the TC10 and TC11 members to submit such material to the TC10 and TC11 for archiving. The availability of datasets, ground truth and performance evaluation tools online is not only good practice, but also a requirement for a field to progress.
We would like make a special request to the organizers of recent and future competitions. Independently of whether you have the competition datasets and evaluation tools available through other Web sites, please consider archiving them with TC10 / TC11 as well. Web sites often go off-line and useful resources are frequently lost forever.
