Newsletter 04

Here are some news relevant to IAPR TC #10. Thank you to all who
contributed with information. If you have some information you think
could be of interest to our community, don't hesitate to send me a
note via Email on that and I will include it in the next issue.

I still haven't "official" news about the DAS'94 workshop; sorry about
that. Another TC of IAPR which organizes a workshop just before ICPR
next year is TC2 (the well known SSPR workshop). I hope the organizers
can send me a note about it for the next issue, as many of us in TC10
are interested in syntactic and structural pattern recognition methods
in our research.

So here we go. First, a note about a French document analysis
conference, CNED'94, to be held next year in Rouen. Information

SCOPE

The purpose of this symposium is to present the results of current
research and to stimulate the exchange of ideas in the general field
of Document Understanding. Papers are solicited on the theory and
practice of:

Document Analysis: Information Retrieval:
Page Processing Full-text/Concept-based Retrieval
Zoning Text Categorization
Segmentation Query Optimization
Character Recognition Query Expansion/Contraction
Context-based OCR Semantic Access Tools
Recognition of Tables and Equations Interaction between Information
Recognition from Flawed Images Retrieval and Database Systems
Graphic Recognition,
Maps/Mechanical Drawings

Specific problems of interest include recognition, routing, and/or
retrieval from large collections of printed technical documents. In
particular, papers dealing with the interaction between recognition
accuracy and retrieval effectiveness are encouraged. Papers utilizing
natural language techniques to improve recognition or retrieval are
also encouraged.

SUBMISSIONS

------------------------
Finally, you have probably all received the advance program for
ICDAR'93, to be held in Tsukuba in October. If somebody hasn't
received it yet, and wants to attend this conference, you can send an
Email to This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. for more information.

Although "official" Technical Committee meetings of the IAPR are only
to be held during the ICPR, I suspect nothing hinders us in having an
informal meeting during ICDAR, where most of us will be, I think.
Therefore, I am going to write to the ICDAR organizers and ask them if
we can have a room at a given time to meet and discuss some points.
More specifically, I hope we can lay the bases for a TC10-specific
workshop in connection with ICDAR'95 during this meeting. All other
topics are welcome; please send me a mail if you have suggestions...

Looking forward to meeting you in Tsukuba,

Karl Tombre, TC10 chairman
