Dear TC10 members and friends,

Welcome to issue #69 of TC10 News.

Our two major events of this year, GREC2003 and ICDAR2003, were a big success. I this newsletter I provide you a brief report on such events and other related informations that arised during them.

GREC'2003 in Barcelona

The Fifth IAPR International Graphics Recognition Workshop (GREC2003) was held in the Computer Vision Center (Barcelona) the July 30 and 31. 48 papers were received (43 papers accepted). The workshop had 45 registered participants. See the GREC2003 web site for post-workshop news.

Some issues to highlight from the workshop are:

* PROCEEDINGS. A set of copies of GREC2003 proceedings is still available at 50 euros. If you are interested in purchasing one copy, please see details at GREC2003 web site http://www.cvc.uab.es/Grec2003/ or send an e-mail to This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. .

* CONTESTS. Two contests were held during GREC2003:
- The second arc segmentation contest, organized by Liu Wenyin, with 2 participants.
- The first symbol recognition contest, organized by Ernest Valveny and Philippe Dosch, with 4 participants.

The contests were a big success, and the inclusion of them has become a key issue in GREC workshops. Contests are useful not only to evaluate the state-of-the-art on algorithms related to different problems of graphics recognition, but also to provide evaluation databases to the community. This time, all the material used in the contests was distributed in a CD among GREC2003 delegates and will be available very soon at the TC10 web page.

* QUESTIONNAIRE ON GREC WORKSHOPS. We have ten years of experience in GREC Workshops. During GREC2003 some opinions suggested that it is time to analyze it and "design" the future editions of GREC workshops in terms of the feedback from the community. Issues like the length and format of the Workshop, the relation with ICDAR, the collaboration with other close comunities, etc. are stated. In order to define and improve the future editions of GREC workshop a committee will be created. This committe will take into acount the feedback from the comunity. With that purpose, a questionnaire was distributed in Barcelona among participants. If you did not attend to GREC2003, you can fill in the questionnaire at http://www.cvc.uab.es/Grec2003/GRECFeedback.htm. Your feedback is very important, so please spend some time to fill in the questionnaire.

* LNCS BOOK. Selected papers of GREC2003 will be published in a book of Springer LNCS series. Important dates are:
- September 30, 2003. Updated papers uploaded to GREC2003 web site.
- October-December. Review process.
- January 10, 2004. Acceptance notification.
- February 28, 2004. Camera-ready.

* GREC'2005. During GREC2003 in Barcelona, we decided where next GREC workshop will be held. It is my pleasure to announce that GREC'2005 will be held in Hong Kong, and organized by Dr. Liu Wenyin.

ICDAR'2003 in Edinburgh

The ICDAR'2003 in Edinburg was a big success, characterized by: Over 310 delegates, interesting invited lectures, presentations, posters, nice weather, good food and a perfect organization!

The TC10 and TC11 chairs would like to thank the organizers for their fantastic efforts. The way the daily programme was composed really sets a standard.

* ICDAR'2003 Proceedings.

The 1279-page proceedings is published by IEEE Computer Society, ISBN number 0-7695-1960-1 (two volumes). See: http://www.essex.ac.uk/ese/icdar2003/

Looking forward to meet again at the ICDAR'2005, Seoul and GREC'2005, Hong Kong!

ICDAR Awards

The ICDAR'2003 Young Researcher Award was presented to two researchers:

Dr. Liu Wenyin (City University of Hong Kong)
Dr. Umadapa Pal (Indian Statistical Institute)

The ICDAR'2003 Award for Outstanding Contributions was presented to:

Dr. Henry Baird (PARC)

Congratulations, once again, to the awardees!

ICDAR'2007 Hosting Bid (Americas)

One bid has been received from the Pontificia Universidade Catolica do Parana, Curitiba, Brazil. A very nice powerpoint presentation was shown at the joint TC-10/11 meeting in Edinburgh. Unfortunately, only a short verbal account could be given at the banquet. The bidders have composed a detailed proposal, including more financial details on hotels and the conference fee, for your assessment, to be disseminated over this channel. They will be happy to obtain feedback from you.
