TC10 News #73

* TC10 workplan and organization for 2005
* Resources
* Upcoming events sponsored by the TC10
* Announcements of interest

Dear TC10 members and friends,

Welcome to issue #73 of TC10 News.

In this newsletter you can find some information of interest to the Graphics Recognition community at large.

Best regards,

Josep Llados
(chairman of TC-10)

In the last ICPR in Cambridge the new or continuing members of different IAPR committees were elected. As probably most of you already know, this is the current structure of the committees more closely related to TC10 for the next two years:

* IAPR Executive Committee:

president: Walter Kropatsch
1st vice president: Karl Tombre
2nd vice president: Sergey Ablameyko
treasurer: Maria Petrou
secretary: Denis Laurendeau

As done in the past, the first vice president, Karl Tombre, acts as the general chair of Technical Committees.

* TC10 chairing:

At the meeting of all TC chairs, I have been proposed as TC10 chair for one additional term and Dorothea Blostein will continue as vice-chair.

* TC11 chairing:

TC11 (Reading Systems) is our twin committee in the field of Document Analysis. Jianying Hu has been elected as new TC11 chair, and Apostolos Antonacopoulos will be the new vice-chair.

Note: a change in chairs also represents a change in the ICDAR Steering Committee, which consists of the TC-10 and TC-11 chairs and an experienced former ICDAR organizer. The ICDAR Steering Committee monitors the ICDAR organization process in order to guarantee continuity over this important series of conferences. The current members of the ICDAR Steering Committee are: Andreas Dengel, Josep Llados (TC10) and Jianying Hu (TC11).

In the meeting of TC chairs, the Technical Committees were asked to increase their activities in two directions, during the next two years:
- work on educational resources, in close cooperation with the IAPR Education Committee
- foster activities around benchmarking, performance evaluation, reference ground-truthed data sets, etc.
So I encourage TC10 members to propose ideas and initiatives concerning the above issues. From the chairmanship we will contact you with some proposals according to your feedback.

* DAS'2004 Working groups summaries

The 6th International Workshop on Document Analysis Systems was held in Florence (Italy) the September 8-10. A number of very interesting papers were presented, some of them in the field of Graphics Recognition. The peculiarity of the workshop was the growing number of papers related to digital libraries and the processing of historical documents.

As tradition, some discussion groups were organized during the Workshop. The working groups were:

- Historical document analysis
- Performance analysis and evaluation
- Document structure/semantics
- Camera-based and color DA
- Future applications for DA

Slides of working group summaries (presented on Friday September 10th) are available at the DAS'04 web site http://www.dsi.unifi.it/DAS04/

* LNCS Post GREC'03 Book

The Post GREC'03 LNCS volume was published by Springer in October 2004. Here is the final bibtex entry for the volume.

editor = "J. Llad\'os and Y.B. Kwon",<br /> title = "Graphics Recognition -- Recent Advances and Perspectives",<br /> publisher = "Springer Verlag",<br /> year = 2004,<br /> series = "Lecture Notes in Computer Science",<br /> volume = 3088,<br /> month = September,<br /> note = "ISBN: 3-540-22478-5"<br /> }</p> <p>The table of contents is given at http://www.cvc.uab.es/iapr-tc10/resources/lncs3088.htm. Attendees to GREC'03 in Barcelona have received a free copy of the book.</p> <p>* Yahoo Document Engineering mailing list</p> <p>You are encouraged to join the new "doceng" (Document Engineering) group on Yahoo! Groups. This moderated group is devoted to computer systems for creating, managing, and analyzing documents. It will provide announcements of conferences (e.g. ACM DocEng, ICDAR, CIDE), jobs, and other scientific and professional activities. It will also be possible to ask for technical assistance and initiate discussions.
