Dear TC10 members and friends,

Welcome to issue #74 of TC10 News.

In this newsletter you can find some information of interest to the Graphics Recognition community at large.

Best regards,

Josep Llados
(chairman of TC-10)

Reminder: The International Journal on Document Analysis and Recognition (IJDAR) has scheduled a special issue on Graphics Recognition, promoted by the TC10.

The manuscript submission due is MARCH 31, 2005.

Call For Papers is available at: http://www.cvc.uab.es/iapr-tc10/conferences/ijdarCFP.htm

* Sixth IAPR International Workshop on Graphics Recognition (GREC'2005)
It is the main activity of the IAPR-TC10. GREC'2005 will be held in Hong Kong as a satellite event of ICDAR'2005 (in Seoul).

Hong Kong, China. August 25-26, 2005.
Extended abstract submission deadline: April 18, 2005
More information at http://www.cs.cityu.edu.hk/grec2005/

* GREC'2005 Contests (Preliminary Call for Participation)

As at the past workshops, some kinds of contests on graphics recognition will be organized at GREC'2005:

- Arc segmentation.
- Symbol recognition.

Researchers are encouraged to participate in the Graphics Recognition Contests. The Call for Participation will be distributed next month. More information at http://www.cs.cityu.edu.hk/grec2005

Nominations Due: May 1, 2005

An ICDAR Award Program has been established to recognize individuals who have made outstanding contributions to the field of Document Analysis and Recognition in one or more of the following areas:

o Research
o Training of students
o Research/Industry interaction
o Service to the Profession

Every two years, two awards categories are presented. Namely, the Young Researcher Award (less than 40 years old at the time the award is made), and the Outstanding Achievement Award. Each award will consist of a token gift and a suitably inscribed certificate.

Nominations are invited for the 2005 ICDAR Awards in both categories.

The nomination packet should include the following:

1. A nominating letter (1 page) including a brief citation to be included in the certificate.
2. A brief vitae (2 pages) of the nominee highlighting the accomplishments being recognized.
3. Supporting letters (1 page each) from 3 active researchers from at least 3 different countries.

A nomination is usually put forward by a researcher (preferably from a different Institution than the nominee)who is knowledgeable of the scientific achievements of the nominee, and who organizes letters of support.

Submission procedure is strictly confidential, and self nominations are not allowed.

Please send these, preferably as a single pdf file, to the Chair of the Awards Committee, Josep Llados. Deadline for receipt of
nominations is May 1st, 2005 but early submissions are strongly encouraged. For further information, please contact:

INRIA proposes 120 one-year post-doctoral positions for young graduates. See http://www.inria.fr/travailler/opportunites/postdoc/postdoc.en.html for more details.

More specifically, we have a possible post-doctoral position available at the QGAR team of LORIA. The research topic is the definition of symbolic and graphical invariants for the analysis of historical documents. See http://www.loria.fr/jobs/postdoc_inria/postdoc_inria?set_language=en&id=35&cl=en for details of the position.

Application deadline: April 22, 2005

Candidates can contact Prof. Karl Tombre (This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. ) for further details.

The Computer Vision Center (CVC) of the Universitat Autonoma de Barcelona invites applications for one-year pre-doctoral research positions in the field of Document Image Analysis. Work will be performed as part of an anticipated collaboration with HP Labs Sant Cugat.

The main responsibility will be to participate in the development of experiments, testing, and analysis of document analysis algorithms with specific applications to:

- Effect of image preprocessing (multi-resolution, skew, etc.) on the accuracy of the document recognition tasks including OCR text quality and impact on advertisement classification.
- Segmentation and zoning of difficult style documents such as magazines and newspapers.
- Analysis and comparison of different symbol recognition engines, primarily ICR, but also including OCR and others as applicable.
- Evaluation of various engine combination strategies (e.g. voting, confusion matrices, pre-select, cascading fallback… etc) for recognition.

The position is for one year. However it can be extended to a PhD in terms of the results obtained. Candidates should hold a degree in a numerate discipline (e.g. maths, computer science, physics, engineering). Full time is preferred, however part-time students will also be welcome.
