The Fourth International Symbol Recognition Contest at GREC 2011

Chung-Ang University, Seoul, Korea

15-16 September, 2011

http://grec2011.cau.ac.kr/

Since 2003, the Symbol Recognition Contest has been aiming to bring together researchers working on Symbol recognition. A new edition of the contest will be organized in the context of GREC’2011. It's goal is to analyze the performance of symbol recognition methods on several types of test data, according to a number of parameters and constraints involved in real-world applications. Thus, the main goal of the contest is not to determine the “best” symbol recognition method, but to help in getting a deeper understanding of the characteristics, pros and cons of various approaches. The evaluation framework for this edition will be very similar to one used in GREC’2009, with some extensions concerning three aspects of the test data:

-         The number of symbols in the test data (new symbols will be added to the framework),

-         “in context” symbol recognition (symbols cropped from real drawings, not perfectly segmented and thus, including parts of their surrounding areas in the drawing)

-         An addition to past competitions dedicated to “Symbol Spotting”. This new challenge consists in the recognition of non-segmented symbols, connected to their environment.

The outcome of the contest will be presented in ICDAR 2011 according to different criteria and well-known metrics (scalability, accuracy, …) for each type of test data.

The website of the contest will be the place where all information regarding the contest will be made available to participants: models of symbols, description of formats, training sets, final tests, submission of results, etc.
